Realizing the Benefits of Your EMR Investment
In order to hasten adoption of the EMR, physicians must be shown how their use of this tool not only presents a positive and quantifiable business case – that is, it can be a good business decision - but even more importantly, a clinical case and a lifestyle case. Widespread adoption will only happen when an information technology application reflects and simulates the concerns and responsibilities of the practicing physician in his day-to-day practice while supporting the nuances in the individual notes of different specialties. That means the basic functionality and inherent design of a given electronic medical record system must become the natural extension of a physician’s activities as they complete daily tasks, and document clinical details of patient care. All this must be done with pushbutton ease while offering the flexibility to ensure the greatest accommodation of physician preferences.
Beyond the business case, the clinical case must clearly show that an EMR makes managing patients easier and better by making a doctor more effective and informed. Many believe that the clinical case for the EMR still must be made from an intuitive or quality perspective because of the difficulty in defining and then quantifying improvements in care and outcome. For the lifestyle case to have validity, physicians must be convinced that by accepting and trusting an EMR, their professional day will be more manageable, productive and effective by a margin that far exceeds the quantifiable value proposition. The bottom line is the lifestyle case will be validated by each physician as he is given back a priceless commodity: his time.
